Battery Hens: If this Doesn’t Make You Go

Vegan I don’t Know What Will

“One robin caged and Heaven’s mad! But when to just that one you add vast flocks of battered battery birds and half starved calves in crated herds and multitudes of tethered sows in narrow stalls – these horrors rouse all Heaven to a rage so wild it’s former rage seems a wonderous mild.”
Patrick Allen

Recently I came across the following heartbreaking video concerning the abandonment of 50,000 chickens, living sentient beings trapped in tiny wire floor cages abandoned and left to starve to death.

Watch the video of the rescue in 2012 of some of the birds – sadly out of 50,000 only about 4,000 were able to be rescued thanks to the determination of Animal Place volunteers.

About the film: “Go inside the largest rescue of farm animals in California history. Follow Animal Place rescuers as they negotiate the release of 4,460 hens from a battery cage egg farm, where the egg farmer had abandoned 50,000 hens without food for more than two weeks.”

While the dedication and determination of Animal Place and other volunteers is inspiring, the way in which these poor creatures where treated is appalling. Many of those who survived the horror of two weeks without water or food where systematically piled up, shoved into tin boxes and gassed. It brought to mind the comparison of factory farming with the evils of the holocaust. The rescuers had to contend  with Animal Services who would not at first allow the hens that were still alive to be rescued. Undaunted Animal Place volunteers went to the farm but were told to vacate the property while thousands of suffering birds were gassed to death and thousands more dead animals were scoop up in dump trucks like so much garbage ;

7:00 pm – “I call the director at animal services. She is told by state veterinarians we can’t take any birds. I won’t take no for an answer. There are thousands still alive.”– Kim Sturla

8:00 pm – “We arrive at the farm, only to be told to get off the property. We watch dump truck after dump truck come to gather dead birds. We can see workers gas the suffering hens.” – David Phinney, Animal Care Coordinator

Again back in 2012  half a million chickens died in a fire on an egg farm near Roggen, Colorado at Moark Hatcheries.

Image the horror, the terror the pain of these helpless animals trapped unable to escape.

500,000 Chickens Perish in Farm Fire

Both of the cases above and many others are shocking disasters which are often preventable. The first was claimed to be lack of communication about who was supposed to feed the birds, the second was a fire one of many that are experienced in factory farming in some cases by heating equipment malfunctions or placement too close to flammable material. However notwithstanding the truth of the matter concerning these tragedies the day-to-day suffering of these animals for the duration of their entire lives –  about two years for a hen who will be sent to slaughter when she is begins lay fewer eggs – is a tragedy itself . For the duration of these two years hens, having previously had their beaks painfully clipped, are cramped together in tiny cages with 8 or 9 others birds on wire floors stacked one on top of another, standing in their own feces, sometime with the decaying bodies of dead hens. They have never seen the light of day, the warmth of the sun. They have never felt a cool breeze ruffle their feathers, they have never walked on earth or took dust baths as is natural for chickens. Their entire life experience is a tiny cage like the one below where they will lay 200 eggs each year – normally a hen lays about forty to fifty eggs.

What of the male chicks ?

Shockingly male chicks are ground up alive, suffocated or gassed because they cannot lay eggs and they are not suitable for chicken-meat production.

“Along with defective and slow-hatching female chicks, they are trashed as soon as they hatch. Upon breaking out of their shells, instead of being sheltered by a mother’s wings, the newborns are ground up alive, electrocuted, or thrown into trashcans where they slowly suffocate on top of one another, peeping to death while a human foot stomps them down to make more room for more chicks.

Read more below about the cruelty of the egg industry

While the article above focuses on the US the same applies worldwide. For example the last six years has seen an increase of 26%  in intensive factory farming here in the UK including chickens along with pigs and cattle, in fact “US-style intensive factory farming of poultry, pigs and cattle is sweeping across the British countryside – raising concerns over animal cruelty”

Here is what happens to male chicks here in the UK

Please watch the video above. Consider if you consume eggs you are complicit in this appalling cruelty to thinking feeling creatures capable of experiencing pain and fear, capable of suffering every single day of their short miserable lives.

“I did not become a vegetarian for my health, I did it for the health of the chickens.”
Isaac Bashevis Singer

“The natural life span of a chicken is six or seven years.

The original ancestors of chickens produced as few as twelve to twenty eggs each year .

Domesticated chickens originated from red jungle fowl, forest dwelling birds of south east Asia. Modern chickens despite selective breeding retain many of the natural behaviours of their wild ancestors.

Chickens contrary to popular belief are intelligent, more so than your cat or dog, and are inquisitive creatures. Researchers have discovered that they are good at solving problems. Chickens it seems are more clever in some respects than small children when it comes to understanding that recently moved objects still exist, a concept that small children do not understand. In their natural environment chickens recognise one another, they form friendships and develop social hierarchies. Chickens enjoy dust baths, more about this later, and roost in trees. They love and care for their young. In the wild they make nests to tend their offspring. The maternal instinct is strong in the hen, she bonds with her chicks before they are born by turning her eggs five times each hour while clucking to the baby chicks inside, who reciprocate by chirping in return both to their mother and each other.”

This treatment of sentient animals is evil, pure evil there can be no excuse, no justification. The motivation is profit of course, as is everything nowadays. Such barbarity has no place in any civilized society. If you eat eggs – and don’t forget in most biscuits, cakes, puddings and any baked product there are eggs – you are contributing to this cruelty and it will never end, if we do not make it end we are part of the problem and perpetuate this cruelty. For most of us the most effective way is for you to change your diet and go vegan, doing so not only helps the chickens and other animals but improves your health and the environment.

If you are still not convinced that changing to a plant-based diet to become vegan is the right thing to do for the sake of these gentle, helpless birds who are sentient beings like you or I, like your cat or dog, than look at the information below.

This video is deeply disturbing and I could not watch it all. How these people can work day after day torturing and killing these tiny helpless creatures is beyond my comprehension. It is profoundly depressing to see such lack of compassion.  It is disturbing in the extreme to know people like this exist and live among us.

This is shocking beyond your wildest imagination

The Forgotten Battery Hens

Her job was to lay eggs for Australia’s biggest egg company. But you won’t believe where this hen lives… Help end this cruelty:

“Video provided by Sandra Mohr Productions. Animal video clips at are FREE—to help animals—because most of them aren’t. Most eggs come from chickens in battery cages. These hens will never touch the ground or have room to stretch their wings. They will live above piles of their own excrement for their entire lives.”

More Action to help bring and end to the exportation of animals.

More about the horrific export of animals by sea including further developments, a petition from the on-line Global activist group Avaaz and other action you can take.

Please read the following from Avaaz which arrived in my email box yesterday and take the suggested actions.

"A whistleblower has secretly filmed thousands of sheep, crammed on a filthy ship, cooking alive in the blazing heat.

It's a giant floating death camp -- and MILLIONS are transported like this every year. But now we have a rare chance to save them!

The World Organisation for Animal Health meets in weeks, and in the wake of this horror footage, some of the biggest animal exporters are considering a full ban on live shipping for slaughter!

A public outcry already won this in New Zealand. Now, if enough of us build a massive global call we could save millions from this cruel fate. Sign now and tell everyone!

Sign now: Stop the animal death ships! - After signing the petition you will be taken to a page with other suggestions for actions you can take. Please take as much action as you can including sharing.

Right now, countries like Australia, Brazil and the UK are reviewing their trade rules. And if we make this campaign huge, get the film everywhere, and run opinion polls showing massive public demand for compassionate animal welfare, we’ll ramp up the pressure before this global meeting, and win.

The live export trade is horrific. Cattle, sheep, and other animals are loaded onto giant ships, trapped in overcrowded conditions with limited access to water and food. But the worst part is the heat -- so extreme that vets say many animals actually cook to death. Then the dead animals are thrown overboard to hide the evidence!

Add your name

Sign now: Stop the animal death ships!
Avaazers have powered undercover investigations and raised the alarm about cruelty to animals time and again. Now, let’s take on and take out the live export trade.

Frankly the videos are so heartbreaking I can't bare to watch.

This sickening barbarity has to end and if enough people speak out there is a good chance things will change. This cruelty has gone on for a very long time, now it is more out in the open we must continue the momentum. There is no place in any civilised society for such exploitation of thinking feeling sentient beings. Please take action and SHARE SHARE SHARE everywhere.

As always in all cases of animal abuse and exploitation for the meat industry a course of action we can take at anytime is to change to a plant based diet, keep meat and other animal products off your plate and go vegan. End the demand for meat, no demand, no profit, no cruelty.

Further action to end live export

Before I begin I have to say that changing from an omnivorous/carnivorous  diet and becoming vegan is ultimately the most effective way of ending the abuse, cruelty and exploitation of just about every living creature on the planet.

However to be realistic it will take many many years before enough people adopt such a diet that animal farming and other exploitation will be a thing of the past. In the meantime animals are suffering in the most shocking and appalling ways imaginable and it has to stop now!  It is bad enough that people continue to eat meat and animals continue to suffer in factory farms, confined, abused and slaughtered but the additional cruelty of shipping these poor creatures to their destination in these appalling conditions only to be brutally slaughtered in much more cruel ways than takes place in their country of origin such as the USA, UK and Australia adds an extra dimension of suffering and misery for these helpless animals. Note there is no such thing as humane slaughter when an animal does not want to die - and no animal wishes to die of course, survival is one  of the most powerful of all instincts present in both human and non human animals.  However some forms of slaughter are far more cruel than others and these poor animals often finish their short brutalised lives with a very painful and protracted death in countries that import live animals.

Here is more action to take to help bring an end to live export

This morning I received the following in my e-mail box concerning the latest developments regarding the Animals Austraila campaign helping to being an end to live export.

New Action to take, please read the following from Lyn White AM
Animals Australia - scroll down for petitions and other actions if you do not have time to read all the information.

This is not a dream.

15 years. ... that's how long I've dreamed of seeing a headline like this. Since I first set foot in a Middle Eastern slaughterhouse and documented the brutal fate of sheep exported live from Australia. 15 years of investigations. Of relentless campaigning. The millions of animals we fought for and lost in that time. And the millions of people who united on their behalf — and refused to give in. I can't tell you what it means to finally wake up to this headline:

"Live export ban faces prospect of passing Parliament

It's been 5 weeks since the world glimpsed the of a live sheep
real life horror export ship. The outcry has only been getting louder. Now, for the first time, an end to this cruel trade is in sight...

For decades, gentle sheep like him have been crushed, starved, and literally cooked alive on live export ships... Historic Bills are coming before parliament that, if passed, could finally bring an end to this nightmare. Historic, because there is cross-party support from key Liberal MPs as well as Labor, the Greens, Derryn Hinch and Andrew Wilkie.

I've been walking the halls of Parliament and I am seeing traditional political foes, emboldened by people like you, set aside their differences to work together to help animals. This is our political system at its finest.

The next weeks and months will test all of us. We must stay loud, and stay strong like never before. Because until these Bills are debated, voted on, and (I pray) passed, live exporters will be fighting tooth and nail to kill any chance of this legislation becoming law.

They too are walking the halls of Parliament. I see them knocking on the doors of every politician who will give them time. They currently have the Prime Minister, lobbyists and big money on their side. We have the truth.

As I write this, our campaign team is gearing up to run the biggest rally the port of Fremantle has ever seen. We're broadcasting powerful TV ads Australia-wide. We've launched strategic public awareness campaigns in importing countries. Every day we're fuelling media stories and working behind the scenes with advocates and influencers around the world...

But all this would be meaningless if it weren't also for you, it's your name on our petitions, behind e-mails and phone calls to politicians — that has gained animals the political attention they have today. And I know you'll be with us to see this through.

It is this level of effort, determination and commitment to give a voice to those who cannot represent themselves, that leads to where we are now — on the precipice of historic change.

While live exporters continue to send shiploads of frightened animals into harm's way — no act of kindness, no e-mail, phonecall or message you send on their behalf, will be wasted. These simple actions can help change their world:

  1. Letting the Prime Minister (Australia) know what you think of live export (click here)

  2. Donating to support our work (click here)

You don't need to be an Australian citizen to take either of the above actions.

If you have not yet taken the actions suggested in the previous two blog entries above please do so now. I have included the links to the petitions directly here but please see the previous two entries for additional actions:

Action from Compassion in World Farming concerning animals exported from the UK

Discussions are underway in governments across the UK about the possibility of a ban on live exports. But the positive impact of any ban will be compromised if it only prevents exports for slaughter, and not for ‘production’ (fattening).

Will you take a moment to email your elected representative(s), and call on them to ensure a comprehensive ban on the export of live animals for both slaughter and fattening?

It is essential that any ban should cover slaughter AND fattening.

Please read more and send a message to your MP.

If you live outside the UK, please click here to take action to end live exports.

On Thursday 14 June, campaigners across the globe will be joining together to call for an end to long distance live transport. Find your nearest event, or get information on how to set up your own event, here.  link also includes five petitions and other actions.

June 16th
Please Help to Finally Stop The Yulin Dog Meat Festival

It's that time of year again, the summer solstice and the barbaric Yulin dog meat festival June 21st for ten days. What should be a celebration of the changing of the seasons is used as an excuse to slaughter helpless animals. Please read the information below and sign the petition:

"Every summer, thousands of dogs — many just puppies — are killed during the ten days of the Yulin Dog Meat Festival. And it's going to happen all over again, unless people like you speak out to stop this year's horrific festival.

One of the most terrifying things about the annual festival is that many household dogs, cats and other pets are abducted by kidnappers trying to make a quick buck as the dog festival begins. Local animal lovers often try to buy the dogs before butchers can, but dog sellers often refuse to sell to activists.

Join the Movement to Stop the Yulin Dog Meat Festival in 2018

Please continue reading and sign and share this petition  urging Chinese President Xi Jinping to save the puppies and stop the 2018 Yulin Dog Meat Festival now."

More information

While there are less animals killed than when the event was first introduced in 2009 as a result of global outrage and protest and the work of animal charities, such as the humane society, the entire event regarding the brutal slaughter of dogs and cats needs to end, each animal's life is important to the individual animal and no dogs or cats should be killed.

There is a lot less publicity for this year's so called festival, maybe as a result of the reduction of the number of animals killed as explained in the petition link above. I had in fact forgotten about this "festival" until seeing the above petition today, so please remind everyone by sharing widely. Until zero animals are killed the protest needs to continue.

One less barbarity in the world makes the world a better and safer place for us all. It is very difficult and indeed depressing to realise that in this world there are people who can so willingly be brutal towards both one another and the other species with whom we share this planet, who seem without conscience or remorse to so easily kill and maim the helpless and vulnerable simply for some perverse pleasure or as a result of misguided ignorance.

Please take the time to help end the dog meat trade by taking as many of the following actions as you can

The Dog Meat Trade

End Trophy Hunting

“Hunting and fishing involve killing animals with devices (such as guns) for which the animals have not evolved natural defenses. No animal on earth has adequate defense against a human armed with a gun, a bow and arrow, a trap that can maim, a snare that can strangle, or a fishing lure designed for the sole purpose of fooling fish into thinking they have found something to eat” Marc Bekoff, Animals Matter: A Biologist Explains Why We Should Treat Animals with Compassion and Respect

Frankly all hunting should be banned in it's entirety. There should be no place in the modern world that allows people to wantonly kill an animal, any animal simply for enjoyment. Surely anyone who takes delight in taking the life of any living being has something wrong with his or her mentality.

As in the instance of this woman who stands triumphantly over the dead body of a giraffe with obvious pleasure. Why? Surely there is no achievement, no satisfaction in gunning down a helpless animal, as no matter the type of animal no creature can defend himself against a person armed with a gun, not even the most vicious of predators can do so and a giraffe is by no means a vicious predator but in the main a gentle creature who was previous to this cowardly attack no doubt grazing peacefully harming no one.

To prevent any confusion I do not imply that predators such as lions, tigers and other more carnivorous creatures should be used as live targets. With the exception of self defence there is no excuse ever regardless of species to kill any animal. No animal should be killed in the name of sport, hunted for pleasure or indeed any other reason. Hunting is a thing of the past, now an unnecessary barbarity participated in solely for entertainment.

Look at the picture of this women, her pleasure in shooting a defenceless creature is all too obvious, it is shocking that such crimes against another living being continue to be permitted.

Sadly as usual it is all about money, greed keeps this barbarity alive: The big game industry in South Africa – from hunting to breeding to tourism – is worth $2bn a year.

Please sign and share the petition to get trophy hunting banned in South Africa:

It's Time to Ban Trophy Hunting in South Africa

"Giraffes are currently considered a  vulnerable species. In fact, according to a 2016 survey, there are less than 100,000 of the animals in the wild and over the last generation, almost 40% of the species has been lost. But because few people have sounded the alarm, many have called their slow disappearance, the "silent extinction."

"according to a recent study by the the International Union for Conservation of Nature "trophy hunting, contrary to the common view, not only is having negative impacts on wild populations but that there is also an extremely close link between legal hunting and poaching."

"It's time South Africa put an end to this horrible practice and create policies that actually protect their unique animal species. Please sign the petition and ask South Africa to ban trophy hunting once and for all."

Outrage after American woman hunts and kills rare giraffe in South Africa

Tess Thompson Talley, a 37-year-old woman from Kentucky, is facing backlash after shooting and killing an elderly male giraffe on a hunting trip in South Africa. Neanderthals did not hunt for pleasure but to survive and I rather doubt they did so generally speaking with such relish at least not in the same way that this person and others like her exhibit. UK Wildlife in Crisis

"It’s up to all of us to protect our wildlife and ensure we live in a world where all life can flourish."
Chris Packham

Here in the UK we are facing an ecological crisis, the UK's biodiversity is under threat. Ninety million birds have gone from our countryside since 1970 including 95 percent of turtle doves which are also at risk of becoming extinct globally.  Also corn buntings, grey partridge, tree sparrows, capercaillie and willow tit are among the species who have suffered “severe” declines since 1970. The UK has lost significantly more nature over the long term than the global average, we are among the most nature-depleted countries in the world.

If you care about our wildlife please watch the following video and take the suggested actions.

More details here:

Make a note in your diary and join the walk for wildlife in central London on 22nd September 2018.

Whether or not you are able to join the walk you can help by promoting the walk and campaign.

You can download posters here on Chris Packham's website:

PETA investigation: Cruelty to sheep in the UK

A disturbing PETA Asia eyewitness investigation of the wool industry in the UK shows workers beating, stamping on, kicking, mutilating, and throwing around sheep.

Please read the following information from PETA ,watch the video and share widely. Warning video contains graphic content showing animal cruelty which some people will find upsetting. Frankly if you don't, you don't have a heart.

"Wool is cruelly derived, no matter where it comes from.

Abuse on Australian wool farms is well documented. Now, a disturbing PETA Asia eyewitness investigation of the UK wool industry shows workers beating, stamping on, kicking, mutilating, and throwing around sheep there, too.

In PETA Asia's investigation, an eyewitness saw cruelty in every one of the 25 English shearing sheds visited. Workers stood on the necks of panicked sheep and violently punched these gentle animals in the face and beat and jabbed them in the head with clippers.

Gaping wounds were sewed up without pain relief.

A farmer dragged two sheep who were unable to walk into a shed and left them without veterinary care. They eventually died. Several more died of a condition that a farmer called a "heart attack" during shearing.

PETA has already exposed rampant cruelty in shearing sheds in Australia, the US, and South America. PETA Asia's investigation shows that the cruelty is global."

Sheep in the UK Beaten, Stamped on, Cut, and Killed for Wool

Please share PETA Asia's investigation with your friends and family and let everyone know how sheep suffer for wool.

If you wear wool please sign the pledge at the end of the web page above to stop doing so. By wearing wool you are complicit, as of course this perpetuates this awful cruelty to these gentle animals. Sheep are highly intelligent creatures, they are sentient beings and they suffer from abuse and cruelty as you would yourself.

Climate Emergency: How you can help

Climate change should be a part of campaigns by animal rights activists. Indeed anyone who says they care about animals should also consider supporting a Climate Emergency campaign and take part in as many actions as
you can to to save our planet.

Climate issues need to be a part of animal rights compaigns because animals are affected as much, if not more than we are. In a way climate change is yet another injustice caused by humans to the other creatures who share this Earth with us because it is caused by our actions. And in the same way any campaign to save Earth must include veganism, because animal agriculture is one of the greatest drivers of climate change. If you eat meat or consume dairy products or eggs and you seriously want to save Earth you need to adopt a vegan - plant based - diet.

This does not mean you have to take to the streets or support a strike. Though these are probably the best ways to now bring about change, they are not the only ones. Not everyone is able to attend protests, demonstrations, rallies, get arrested or participate in any other active role. Many sick and disabled people or elderly people may feel that this is not something they could do but nevertheless have strong feelings of support and wish to bring about change to save our world and its inhabitants from the effects of a mass extinction as a result of global warming.

Below are ways you can help both by way of direct action such as strikes, demonstrations and protests,  but also in a less direct way such as signing and sharing petitions, writing to government officials, newspapers and campaigning on social media.

When I began to compile this list I did not expect to come across so many organisations that are fighting to save our world from the devastation of climate change. This is heartening to say the least and those of you who despair that it may be loosing battle may take consolation in the number of people who are fighting to win, for Earth, for humanity and for all living beings.

The fact is we fight or die, we fight for ourselves and for the animals who have done nothing to bring about this disaster but like us will face annihilation as a result of what is now the sixth mass extinction.

Note: I don't necessarily support all of the ideas, strategies and actions of the organisations listed below. No organisation for any cause can ever entirely fit with ones personal ideology/ethics or world view. For example you will not find all over support for veganism or even animal rights in all of the groups listed below, though they should be. Neither will you find many who really recognise the fact that capitalism is the cause of climate change and therefore needs to ultimately be abolished rather than modified.  And furthermore capitalism particularly the fossil fuel and meat industry will a actively hinder progresses in stopping or mitigating the drastic effects of climate change. Continuing to support the modification of this system of economy will in my opinion hinder progress in saving Earth. But all this can be sorted out in due time, the need for radical change is immediate and we have to work shoulder to shoulder with people who may not necessarily agree with our world view. So we have to work alongside Extinction Rebellion and similar while possibly maintaining certain critiques of them. Having said all that we have to keep in mind that we simply cannot carry in the same way regarding our diet or our unfair economic system which favours the tiny minority at the expensive of the overwhelming majority.

Direct Action Demonstrations protests

The most obvious and the one that most of us are familiar

What follows are suggested organisations promoting information along with less direct or confrontational action concerning climate change

Earth First

Media from the front lines of ecological resistance

You can judge and denounce those activists, who were risking and sometimes losing everything, long before climate panic set in, or you can write to some of them in prison and tell them how sorry you are, how sorry everyone should be, that no one listened.

Eco Prisoner list

The focus of the Earth First! Prisoner Support Project is on eco-prisoners, caged animal liberationists and prisoners of indigenous land struggles, who share an Earth First! bio-centric viewpoint, either in the actions which led to their arrest or in their general activism. We also stand in solidarity with people facing imprisonment for their beliefs and actions reflecting a broader vision towards liberation from the oppressive systems.

The Green Aniti-capitlaist Front

The Green Anti-Capitalist Front is an alliance of groups and individuals united by a belief that capitalism is one of the core causes of the environmental crisis threatening us all, and that if we do not act soon the costs of that crisis will fall on the poor and powerless.

We are encouraged by the ability of Extinction Rebellion to call people onto the streets and push their demands for zero emissions. However, we believe that meeting these demands will not be possible without abolishing capitalism, a system reliant on the total exploitation of nature; whether that be sacrificing our clean water to frack for hydrocarbons or sacrificing our children to the production line.
